My Weekly Update – Future, Present and Return to the Past

 Future

A wise friend once told me not to make promises I can’t keep, not even to myself. I made some goals for myself at the beginning of the summer.  And, I did pretty good until August hit and then my life seemed to get caught in a tail spin.  Nothing tragic or anything, just out of my control.  I think I need to change my tactics.  So, here are my goals until my trip home on December 6th.

  1. Write for 2 hours per day.  Win Campnano.
  2. Sweat for 1 hour per day. Exercise in any form.
  3. Post on my blog 4 times per week.  Quality post, no fluff.
  4. Stop buying books until I read the ones I have.
  5. Pay off my credit card (3,012.05 down from 10,000.00 at the beginning of the year). Which means stop spending money. Which means, when I am bored, see 1-4. (READ, WRITE or SWEAT).

What do you do when you feel your life is going off track?

Present

The move to Shanghai is under way and I figured if I was going to be living in a new city, I should learn a little about it.  Five facts about my new home town:

  1. There are 23 million people in Shanghai. That’s a lot of people.
  2. 20,000 jews fled to Shanghai to escape the Nazis. I didn’t not know that.
  3. Parents still gather at the Shanghai Market with the resume of their unwed children in the hope of finding them a spouse.  I need to tell my mother.
  4. KFC showed up in Shanghai 5 years before McDonalds.   I wonder if it’s real chicken.
  5. There are 2.5 female toilets for every 1 male toilet and about 80% of public toilets are ‘squatters’. If you have never had to squat to pee, count yourself lucky.

Bonus:  I think I mentioned it before, but it’s worth repeating.  My new home is a high rise apartment on top of a mall with a movie theater.  Sydney Quotes the Movies will get a boost in frequency.

Michaeljholley.com – Great post on “Why a Daily Routine is so important.”

Dog Days of Summer Blog Fest – Ultimate Vacation

When I heard about this Blog Fest I had to join.  Thanks so much Jeremy Bates.  Great idea.  Since I haven’t had much of a summer and no hint of a summer holiday, I would like to at least hear about others enjoying their summer.  Click on the badge to read other summer inspired posts.

Along with living vicariously though my fellow blog hoppers, I wanted to share with you my Ultimate Vacation.

I have a long bucket list of places I would like to visit all over the world, but my Ultimate Vacation might surprise you.  I would like to drive across the United States.  I know it doesn’t have the history of Europe or the cultural diversity of of Asia, but I think it would be so much fun to visit different parts of America and see first hand the american culture in all it’s forms.  I have it mapped out already.

I would start in Maine in the springtime.  I picture a harbor in Maine with a lighthouse as the perfect place to start my cross country adventure.  Next stop would be New Hampshire to visit Dover established in 1623 (a long, long time ago) and Vermont to the Ben & Jerry’s factory.  All the ice cream I can eat.

Then, I would spend a few days in Boston (great city), then New York (greater city) and New Jersey (I have to get to Pennsylvania some how) and then proceed west.

Next, I would stop in Philadelphia.  Walnut Street is one of my favorite places to shop and I haven’t spent nearly enough time there.  After shopping, it would be nice to drop in on family and friends in Maryland, DC and Virginia.

I would make a quick drive through Kentucky to get to Chicago.  Chicago would be my food stop.  From the pizza to 3 restaurants that are on my bucket list, I would leave Chicago full.

I would head over to Wisconsin (cheese and white water rafting), then Minnesota (Mall of the Americas). While the weather is still good, I would spend some time in South Dakota.  I really want to see Mount Rushmore.  Montana would be fun, too.  It it’s not to cold, camping in Glacier National Park would be amazing.

I would drive straight through Wyoming to go skiing in Colorado, spend a week at a writer’s retreat in Taos, New Mexico, and then relax in a spa retreat up in the red mountains of Sedona, Arizona before driving to Vegas for some serious indulgence; food, shows and gambling.

I would proceed north, to Lake Tahoe for some golf and then proceed to Oregon to explore some of the ghost towns and then wind up in Seattle, Washington for what else, but coffee.

All in all this trip would take about a year.  But, just think of the things I would see, adventures I would have and the stories I would write.

That is my Ultimate Vacation. What is yours?

Sydney Quotes the Movies – The Dark Knight Rises

The Dark Knight Rises is the third installment in the Chris Nolan Batman Trilogy.  I was a good ending to a saga that began 7 years ago, in my life.  I have always enjoyed super heros movies;  Superman, Spiderman, Ironman, Hulk  and all the other Avenger greats.  I even enjoyed the Keaton, Kilmer and, dare I say, Clooney Batman Movies.  But, they had the comic book feel, which made the movies fun and enjoyable.   They were colorful, whimsical, and funny.  They were a good escape.  But, Chris Nolan’s Batman was different.  It was real.  It was dark, sexy, cruel, clever, complex and tragic at times. This last movie did its job.  It tide up the loose ends and concluded the trilogy brilliantly.

But, I had a few issues with the movie on its own. One issue I had was it just didn’t have the typical Batman'”swagger’ of the other two movies.  The first, Batman Begins, told you how it all started and the second, The Dark Knight was all about the Joker and  the greatness that was Heath Ledger (r.i.p.). In both films, Bruce Wayne’s persona was so radically different from The Batman.  It made sense and it was familiar.

This movie, Bruce Wayne was a little sad.  He was in pain for most of the movie, he didn’t dominate the fights, he didn’t have the coolest toys.  He was angry, but he didn’t know how to use it to his advantage.

The second issue I had was it didn’t have enough gadgets.  Lucious only showed us a couple of cool new things.  One was a new aircraft called the Bat.  It looked more like a small version of the alien ship in The Battleship Movie; not slick and ominous like the batmobile.  There was one scene where Bruce Wayne was walking the red carpet at a charity event and he used an electromagnetic pulse to shut off the paparazzi’s cameras.  That was pretty cool.  Nice dig at the paparazzi. Good one Mr. Nolan.

Nevertheless, I am a stickler for patterns and they didn’t show up in this one.  But, I enjoyed it for what is was.  The end of a story and an end of an era.  Now for the quotes:

Bane:  We are introduced to the evil Bane from the beginning scenes.  Is it just me or does he sound like Sean Connery?  Read the quotes with that voice in mind.

“Gotham, take control . .  take control of your city.  Behold, the instrument of your liberatation! Identify yourself to the world!”

“No one cared who I was, until I put on the mask.” The mask was a character itself.

“Calm down, Doctor!  Now’s not the time for fear. That comes later.”

“When Gotham is ashes, you have my permission to die.”

Captain Jones:  “I’ll die before I talk.”
Bane:  “I’m on your schedule, captain.” Bane was actually pretty clever.

Roland Daggett:  “You’re pure evil!”
Bane: ” I’m necessary evil.”  Bane was one evil bad ass.

Seline Kyle (Catwomen):  Anne Hathaway was a good catwomen.  She was helped by the outfit and the stunt coordinator, but she had the right attitude and her voice when she delivering the lines was really cool.

“There’s a storm coming, Mr. Wayne.  You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you’re all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.”

Jim Gordon:  He was always one of my favorite characters because he loved his city of Gotham and no one said “The Batman” better then him.

“We were in this together, and then you were gone.  Now this evil . . rises. The Batman has to come back.”

Bruce Wayne (Batman):  Like I said, he was a little sad at times in this film.  He switched between, being a hero, to focusing on the greater good, to cocky savior.  It was a little confusing.

“This city needs me.”

“I need you to get me back in the game.”

“Tell me where the trigger is.  Then . . . you have my permission to die!”

Lucious Fox:  Another one of my all time favorites.  Lucious had the morals and the toys.

“I call him The Bat, and yes Mr. Wayne it does come in black.”

What did you think of the The Dark Knight Rises?  Did it meet your expectations?  What was your favorite quote?

Tattoo Tuesday – D.C. McMillen

I am so excited to feature the very talented D.C. McMillen here on Tattoo Tuesday. She has a great tattoo story and she has her mother to blame thank.

My Mom Talked Me into My First Tattoo

It was about 2am when I walked into a 24 hour convenience store. I was a scantily clad 19 year old who had spent the evening in the club district. He was a very large, young Asian man covered in tattoos, who worked behind the counter. We chatted about stuff I can’t remember, with the exception that his uncle owned the store and needed him to cover a shift, and then he asked if I was free the following evening. I told him I had plans to get my belly button pierced and if he would like to come along, I knew of a great little dive bar just around the corner.

For a man covered in large, detailed tats, his face flushed to a shocking shade of pink when he watched the needle pierce my skin. I laughed at his reaction and we went for dinner and drinks and then a party at my friend’s house.

My mother was, well, grossed out at my belly button ring. I told her I planned to go back to get another piercing the next week and she begged me to reconsider. I wasn’t surprised by my mom’s reaction. She had always had a weird thing about piercings. She did not work up the courage to pierce her own ears until she had reached her twenties and when I got my ears pierced at age eleven she could not even watch. She did go with me to the salon, though, and sat on a bench outside eating ice cream (her ultimate comfort food) while I went to my appointment. When I pierced another set of holes in my ears a year later with a needle and ice cubes, she almost passed out.

What did surprise me, however, was my mother’s suggestion that I get a tattoo instead of another body piercing.

“You want me to get a tattoo?” I asked.

“Why not? You’re creative, artistic and you have a great body. You can come up with something funky and oh so you. Put one pretty much anywhere and it will look good on you, sweetie.”

“Um…”

“Trust me. If you want one, do it now while you’re young. When you’re old you’ll spend your time regretting the shit you didn’t do, not the shit you did do.”

She had a point, even if she was contradicting herself by trying to talk me out of the piercing.

I had been designing tattoos since I was sixteen, selling the designs to a couple of tattoo artist friends, and had always planned to get one or two tattoos of my own one day. My mother’s unsolicited advice is what made me finally take the plunge. I did not use one of my own designs for that first tattoo, though, nor did I go to one of my friends to get inked. Despite the fact that my artwork had sold to more than a few buyers and a couple of paintings even hung in office buildings in downtown Toronto, I never felt confident in my work. I was not about to trust my body to a tattoo artist who was so artistically impaired that he liked my art. Instead I walked into a highly regarded tattoo shop on Queen Street and picked an image off the wall.

I did not bring the hot Asian guy with me this time; I went alone, which worked out in my favour because the artist who inked me turned out to be an even hotter, larger Asian guy with even more awesome tattoos. What luck!  😉

The tattoo I chose was a large tribal style frog on my shoulder blade. Many days in my early childhood were spent catching and releasing frogs. When I moved to the city I began collecting toy frogs, figurines, frog carvings, etc. to remind me of home.  I still have much of the collection.

I proudly showed my mom my new tat. It was a little larger than she expected but she liked it.

“See? Aren’t you glad you got that out of your system now while you’re young?” my mom asked.

“Actually, I made an appointment to get another tattoo next month,” I answered.

My mother rolled her eyes and grumbled that at least I wasn’t putting another hole through my body.

My Weekly Update – Camp, Compliments and Candy

Camp NaNoWriMo

Four days in and I have to say that it is a lot more challenging then the last writing challenge I did.  Being on goal is about the only good thing I can say about the experience so far.  But . . .

It is still early and I still love the story.  I was happy to get some great advice about POV last week from my blog friends.  My concerns about writing from the male point of view were reduced by an admission from AM Schultz.

amschultzcom says: We have had lots of fine interactions on the Twitter and on the blogs, so I am going to share a little secret with you, but you can’t tell anybody else:“But, my biggest concern is that I have never writing a story from a man’s POV. What if my big strong, sensitive guy starts sounding like a girl?”When nobody is around, and our machismo is not on public display, ALL men sound like girls. :-)

For the rest of you doing Camp NaNoWriMo, how was your first few days?

Compliments

I received one of the best compliments the other day and all because I RT’ed a post.

I am not brining this up to brag (although it is official, I am awesome), but to bring attention to what doing so little can mean to other writers and bloggers.

I will continue to support the blogging community to make myself worthy of writing along side great bloggers such as Paul at All Groan Up.

Candy

I was in the Green Grocery yesterday and they had restocked.  Let me back up a little and explain.  I live at a resort 45 minutes away from a decent grocery story.  But, there is a little convenience store on the resort campus, which stocks it shelves once every 6 months.

I was pleasantly surprised that yesterday was a restock day.  That means, writing snacks for the week; Sour Skittles, Soda Water & Cheese Crackers.

What is your favorite writing snack?
