Tattoo Tuesday – Colette Saucier

I am very excited to welcome not only an award winning writer, but my new blog friend, Colette, to Tattoo Tuesday.

Cotette, here are your five questions.

1. How old were you when you got your first tattoo?

I get my first tattoo right after my 27th birthday, although I had wanted to get one even longer. This was more years ago than I care to admit, and tattoos were not nearly so ubiquitous – especially on women. I wanted to give it some thought and think of something that would always be true for me.

2. What made you want to get your first tattoo?
I have seen so much beautiful body art, and, for those who get ink thoughtfully, it’s an incredible outlet for self-expression. When I got my first ink, there was no laser removal, no going back. For me, that is integrity – a commitment to one’s self.

3. How many tattoos do you have? If only one, do you want more?

I have three: I have the ohm symbol on my inner ankle so I see it when I have my legs crossed as I meditate. On my inner left arm, I have “ohm namah shivaya” in Sankskrit. The meaning translates to “I bow to the divine within myself.” It is a reminder that I can always be a better person. On the back of my neck, I have a symbol based on the triskele that represents how my life and my marriage are moving forward.

I have seen some quite elaborate designs recently that I would love, but my time for that has probably passed. But I might get a cute little mushroom on my ankle some day.

4. What is your tattoo story? Tell me the most recent or your favorite.

Remember how I said I wanted to be sure to get a tattoo that would always be true about me? Well, I decided to get the symbol for my astrological sign – Cancer – because I knew that would never change. I had it done on the back of my neck so I could wear my hair down if I wanted to cover it and up if I wanted to show it off. Unfortunately, most people mistook it for “69”! So I was not getting the kind of reaction I would have wanted! Last year, I had it made over into the triskele, and I am extremely pleased with it.

5. Tattoos on a significant other, like or dislike? Why

I don’t like it when a guy is covered with tattoos or has sleeves, but of course I like them. Ink kind of runs in my family! My father and my brother both have tattoos, and my daughter and my husband got their first tattoos together (kind of a bonding experience for them!). All three of my daughters have multiple tattoos, and my husband and I got the same tattoo – “ohm namah shivaya” in Sankskrit – together as our commitment to being better partners to one another.

Amsterdam Tattoo Museum

The connection between tattoo’s and writing for me is all about the sacrifices related to creating something out of nothing and the pain that goes into doing just that. If you are a writer and haven’t experience some pain regarding the process, well, keep going. And, just like a tattoo, yeah it hurts, but when its over, their is this unique and permanent piece of art in the world.

The Amsterdam Tattoo Museum demonstrates the creation of art.

Tattoo Tuesday – Badge Revealed & Good News for Tattoo Museum in Amsterdam

Tattoo Tuesday will be a constant feature on my blog, if only for my own amusement. I welcome anyone with a great tattoo and/or a great tattoo story to share them with the world. Amsterdam Tattoo Museum

Every since I heard about the Amsterdam Tattoo Museum, I have been planning a trip to see it. Sort of like the trip to Mecca for tattoo lovers. A few weeks ago, the Amsterdam Tattoo Museum was shut down and the building owners were preventing the museum owner to operate any long and the collection of tattoo history was being held hostage.

Several events across the world by some of the best tattoo artist in the world were held to raising money to help the museum and protect its collection.

It looks like the campaigned worked and the museum is going to re-open. I wanted to share this because I love the way the tattoo community rallied together to support and save a piece of their culture and history. People coming together to help each other is a beautiful thing.

Tattoo Tuesday – Jennifer Ricketts

Jennifer Ricketts has some bad ass tattoos. Just check them out and check out her answers to Tattoo Tuesday’s Five Questions.

1. How old where you when you got your first tattoo? I was 24 years old when I got my first tattoo.

2. What made you want to get your first tattoo? One of my favorite bands of all time is Green Day. Their American Idiot album was so inspiring to me, especially after being depressed that Al Gore lost the Presidential election to George W. Bush. I felt like the album spoke directly to me, and I loved the heart grenade symbol. After thinking about getting it as a tattoo for a year, I took the plunge!

3. How many tattoos doe you have? Right now I have four tattoos–the heart grenade and a bottle of poison on my left arm, and the beginnings of a cameo and Hello Kitty as a punk rocker on my right arm. 😀 I’m planning on having 3/4 sleeves done–my left arm will be what I like to call my “arm of destruction.” Along with the heart grenade and bottle of poison, I’d like to get a Day of the Dead skull, maybe a gun, a machete…it expresses my view that it’s ironic to believe using violence will bring about peace. Violence only begets more violence.

The pieces on my right arm each represent the people I love. My mom loved cameos, and I got that tattoo for her. She passed away when I was fourteen, and having this tattoo makes me feel like a part of her is still with me, especially after having my own children. The Hello Kitty tattoo is for my daughter–she loves Hello Kitty. I haven’t thought about what other pieces I’ll add, but I want the cameo to be finished first anyway. I want to add a frame and make the silhouette skeletal with inspiration from Pride & Prejudice & Zombies.

I won’t only have tattoos on my arms, ha ha. I also want them on my legs, back and sides. I’d like a chest piece, but my husband is totally against the idea only because he thinks it’d be difficult to cover up for a future job.

4. What is your tattoo story? If you have more than one tattoo, tell me your recent or your favorite tattoo story? My most recent tattoo is Hello Kitty, and I had it done last August when my husband and I were in Las Vegas celebrating our tenth anniversary together. We stayed at the Palms, which had a tattoo parlor in the casino part, and I couldn’t resist. 😀 Plus I think it’s funny to have gotten a Hello Kitty tattoo when I was thirty.

5. Tattoos on a significant other, like or dislike? Why? My husband has three tattoos–the lightning bolt hitting the man from the American Idiot album, the girl from Green Day’s Kerplunk album, and a rock-a-billy zombie. He has always said he thinks the girl on the cover of Kerplunk looks like me, and our son agrees. 🙂 My husband and I both think the tattoo artist didn’t do a great job on the lightning bolt–that was the first and only time my husband ever got a tattoo from that particular artist.

Tattoo Tuesday – Ava (Jordanna East)erby

I am so excited to introduce you all to Ava (Jordanna East)erby – love her name.

Five Questions:

1. How old where you when you got your first tattoo? I was 16. The legal age you can get a tattoo is 18, but if you have a parent/guardian sign a waiver you can have one done at 16. The deal was I had to continue to keep my grades up and it had to be done in a location where it would never be seen at school. My mother took me to the tattoo shop, signed the form, and left to get her hair done. Yes, she LEFT! I was alone with a 300lb man covered in tats for my very first tattoo. I impressed him though. He said he’s had grown men not sit still for the entire duration of a tattoo. That day I got a black and gray tiger on my upper back holding a red rose in its mouth. It’s kind of faded now, so I’ll be having it touched up and incorporated into the large back/rib piece that I have planned.

2. What made you want to get your first tattoo? I grew up rather self-conscious of my body, but as I grew into it, I wanted to celebrate it. I wanted to adorn it, like a new home. I got my belly-button pierced the year before (also signed for, haha), then I graduated to tattoos.

3. How many tattoos do you have? 6/7. Weird answer, right? If someone else is looking at me, it appears I have 6 (both wrists, upper arm, upper back, lower back, and hip), but one of my wrists is actually two tattoos. While in Tahiti, my husband and I got traditional Polynesian tattoos; mine was a Polynesian gecko around my wrist. When we returned to the states, I had my artist add several Tiare flowers around it, the Tahitian national flower.

4. What is your tattoo story? If you have more then one tattoo, tell me your most recent or your favorite tattoo. My most recent tattoo is the one described above. My favorite tattoo is my arm. I originally had a paw print and a nickname from my youth. It was an awful piece of crap. My current artist covered it up with a Bengal tiger and several tiger lillies. If you’re looking for it you can still see the paw print and, believe it or not, I like that.

5. Tattoos on a significant other, like or dislike? Why? Love! So much in fact that my ex got a tribal sleeve done to try to impress me. But he ended up passing out as soon as the needle touched him. Very embarassing. But my darling Hubby-pants has several, with plans to get more. I really want him to get wording around his collar bone. That’s the sexiest tattoo a man can get. Doesn’t even matter what it says. It could say something about green eggs and ham for all I care. (You hear that Hubby-pants?!)

Bio: Jordanna East is currently working on her first novel, Blood in the Paint, as well as its prequel novella, Blood in the Past, due out in March 2013 (with the novel to follow in Summer 2013). She lives in New Jersey with her awesome-sauce husband and their freakish love of sports. She looks forward to at least four more tattoos. Don’t worry, it’s just art.
