I was torn between traveling into the past or experiencing something new in the future. The unknown future would be more anxiety inducing, so I would like to go back in time and witness a historically significant event.
I have been adding to my TBR list books written during the Harlem Renaissance. I would like to spend a weekend in Harlem between 1920 to 1930. I would book a room on Striver’s Row and offer a shy curtsy to Mr. Langston Hughes as I strolled the streets of Harlem in search of other famous residents such as Marcus Garver and novelist Countee Cullen.
I’d spend a lazy Saturday afternoon at The Lenox Lounge and flirt with Mr. John Coltrane by telling him how much I loved his music. I’d enjoy my coffee and attempted to read my Claude McKay novel, but it’s quite difficult when he’s sitting on a small stool hunched over a table in the corner. I can’t stop watching his shoulders as they tense and relax to a rhythm he must hear only in his head. He scribbles into a small notebook and chain smokes while downing one expresso after another.
I could watch forever, but I head back to my room for a short nap. Tonight’s going to be a long one. We start with dinner and dancing at The Cotton Club and if I don’t brake an ankle or pass out from dancing we’d end at the Savoy Ballroom drunk crying in our sherry while while feeling every last melancholy melodic note out of Billie Holiday mouth.
When I make it back to my room, I collapse and experience the night all over again, in restless dreams. I’d wake and dress in haste as I grabbed the last of the fresh baked loafs from a street vendor while strutting down the street on my way to the Harlem Suitcase Theatre to catch Mr Hughes’s latest production.

You have it all planed out! Great Stuff!
I do like Pk’s cover the watch makes it form me.
It is pretty great. Such a cool concept.
Ha, you brought the time alive! Makes me want to go there too!
I’m looking forward to PK’s release.
Hi Lynda. Thank you. Me, too. Even though I’ve already read it, can’t wait for the final product.
CONGRATS to Pk! Great cover. Interesting choice for your time travel trip.
Thanks Susanne. I can’t wait until Butterman Travel becomes a reality.
Coltrane!! Yes!! I’d love to go to Nawlins too for the birth of jazz. Imagine the fun that was!!
Love your snippet, Sydney! Thank you so much for helping out and sharing the day with me!
You are quite welcome, PK. I thought about New Orleans as well. I’ve lived there before and love the whole scene.
Oh, very nice choice! How did it not even occur to me to rub elbows with favorite authors? Though I guess my big favorites were sprawled across Europe in the mid 19th century… I would have needed a very long train trip and some sort of translator!
I think the staff of Butterman Travel can do something to help you out. Maybe brain implanted linguistics. If they have time travel, I am sure they have all sorts of other cool technology.
I think I’ve heard of this before. At any rate, I love that cover! This sounds like a lot of fun. I don’t know much about the Harlem Resistance, but I’m intrigued by this post to learn more.
Hi Katie. It’s a great book. Make sure you check it out.
The cotton club and Billie Holiday would love to hear her sing! Good choice, fun blog hopp and great cover for PK’s new book. Sounds fantastic!
Thanks Siv. I think it would be a blast.
Excellent choice! I LOVE your play-by-play! Yes, PK really chose a winner with this! CONGRATS to her!!!!!
Hi Michael, This was a really cool blogfest. Everyone has thought about time travel at one time or another.
Hey, Sydney,
I’m right there with you on the Claude McKay book. He’s one of the writers I read in my youth. Your trip sounds idyllic.
Thanks Joy. I could just picture the sights, sounds and smells. It would be epic.
Hi, Sydney! I struggled with my choice too before I settled on my time trip. It’s not often that you get to decide where/when you’d like to travel. 😉
Your post was very vivid and intriguing. While I was reading it, it felt as though I was on the trip with you. 🙂
Aw, thanks Chrys. I enjoyed writing it. It’s hard to choose. So many good choices.
You have it all thought out! Awesome!
Yeah. I love this time period for inspiration.
Oh! That would be a fun time period. I’d join you and rock it with my amazing Charleston, and check out all those hair bobs and flapper glam.
Oh wow, I didn’t even get into the clothes. Cool time period.
You are in for a wild time!
Haha. That’s the idea, right?
You had me at “Mr. Langston Hughes” 🙂
😉 He was such a creative man.
I’m so excited for PK. And I have no idea the answer to the question. Soooo many choices. Love your entry, Sydney. There’s no way I could have topped that (or come close).
Thanks Stina. This was such a fun Blogfest.
Past for me definitely. Good idea to go back to a place you’ve been reading about.
