Writing Assignments
In my quests for finding employment, I applied to a writing network and was accepted. My first assignment is due on Friday. So, hyped about this. In addition, I have a guest post to complete by Friday and two chapters of edits due on Monday.
And, to top it all off, I sign up for a Short Story Contest, which is due on Friday. This is where I need your help. The contest sets heats and everyone in my heat for this first round has to write in the same genre and use the same character. I thought is would be a great challenge until I saw the genre. I have to write a fantasy story. I don’t have anything against fantasy, I just don’t read it and don’t know much about the genre. It’s not the same as science fiction, right?
Huge favor – share with me your favorite Fantasy writers? I need a point of reference.

His goal is to write a short story a day. He currently has two volumes for sale. I suggest you pick them up. Great stuff and you can read a story in 10 minutes. Who doesn’t have 10 minutes.

I’m so proud of the book club, too. What a fantastic day. You did a great job.
Fantasy…I sort of write what I consider to be YA fantasy adventure, but sometimes think it’s broken down into different categories. I’d consider Harry Potter to be MG/YA fantasy adventure, like I write. Twilight…supernatural fantasy. And then there’s the sci-fi and romance fantasy. I think every genre can have a fantasy element to it, if it wants to be included.
You said everyone was given the same character…so evidently your character is described a little. So you have the beginnings of a world created and a bit of a setting, just by knowing who he is. Is he a knight? Add a dragon or ogre. Is he Luke Skywalker? Add a wookie and a droid. Is she a 16 year old girl? Add a vampire and a werewolf.

Karen Marie Moning is my favorite author in that genre. Her Fever Series (Dark Fever is the first book) are some of my favorite books ever.
Fantasy is one of my favourite genres because its tentacles reach into many other genres like thriller, romance and crime and it’s found in everything from children’s literature to erotica. I’ve been following a Goodreads thread that discusses the “fantasy” definition, one which seems to have morphed over time. It includes urban fantasy, high fantasy, paranormal fantasy and many others. The “fantasy” element can be as subtle as one character with the power of telepathy to a whole world where everyone has telekinesis and inanimate objects talk. As a writer, it’s a genre that lets you stretch your imagination. Good luck with your assignment – it sounds like fun to me.
What a busy writing life you have! Of course I’m super excited about this challenge since I write epic fantasy (in the vein of: Brent Weeks, Patrick Rothfuss, Brandon Sanderson, Christopher Paolini, Kristen Britain, Melanie Rawn). The main thing to know about fantasy is that it isn’t sci-fi. If you add a spaceship, you’re sci-fi. 🙂
Actually, anything can be considered fantasy. Paranormal, epic, high, medieval, contemporary, it all depends on you and what you want to write. You could make it a sweet ‘Once upon a time…’ tales in the vein of Cinderella or Snow White, or you can have Orcs, dragons, and wizards like Lord of the Rings. Have fun with it and experiment with different kinds of magic. Does your character cast spells, or can they manipulate the environment? Are there ‘rules’ to using magic? If you have a telepath and she tries to read someone’s mind, will she be arrested? Or perhaps someone else can tell that she’s using telepathy and can focus their thoughts on hers to steal the information. Anything is possible!

No spaceships. Well great. I didn’t mention my character has to be a astronaut on a fishing trip.
