Blurb :

They hadn’t seen each other in six years.
She’d always had a crush on him.
He’d only ever seen her like a little sister.
And now…he’s back.
Brooklyn
I thought that he was a part of a distant past. I thought I didn’t feel anything for him now, but I was not so sure anymore. Having him back in my life, for however long it was, was making me see things differently. So many things had changed in the last six years and somehow I’d lost myself and forgotten all about my dreams.
My home life was still a mess, my personal life was nothing to boast about and when I see how successful he is, how everything he’d always wanted came true, I couldn’t help but feel lacking in a lot of ways. But he’s back and he needed me. I knew I was the only one who understood that part of his life, the only one he’s willing to share it with. My heart is still beating too hard and too fast for him and this time around, I was as much an adult as he was.
Having a six year age gap didn’t mean shit.
Nolan
Being back in Riverdale was harder than I thought. I’d turned my back on that life, but there had always been that one girl in my head. Little B. Now she’s nothing like the twelve year old girl I’d last seen. She’s a young woman, gorgeous and sexy. I couldn’t stay away. There’s something drawing me to her and it goes beyond my need to reconnect with her, to have her back in my life and fill the hollow part of my chest. But I couldn’t forget the little girl she had been; I shouldn’t forget the little girl she used to be.
Growing up with a junkie mother and nobody else, my neighbor, Brooklyn, had been my only happy place. I had taken care of her, and when I had left, I had to leave behind a huge part of me. I couldn’t do it again. I needed her. Once again, she’s the only person I want in my life, but I wasn’t sure if it was for all the right reasons.
Were there too many obstacles in the way?

Short Excerpt:
“I won’t push you away.”
His Adam’s apple jumped once and a smile brightened his face. My eyes landed on his pierced lower lip and a wave of lust punched me low in my belly. I cleared my throat, feeling uncomfortable with the pictures my brain conjured.
He came closer, erasing the little space separating us. I could feel the washed away denim of his blue jeans and his firm thigh underneath against my bare leg. I wanted to close my eyes and revel in his presence, in the feel of his body against me, but I didn’t. I kept my eyes open as he leaned into me and wrapped his arms around me. The lean muscles in his arms flexed, his bare and hot skin brushing mine. I felt naked in my tank top as his bare arms were doing things to me I never thought possible.
“Relax, Brooklyn. It’s just me,” he said in my ear, his thin lips and loop tracing the words against the sensitive skin of my ear. I never realized before how an ear could be so erogenous. I couldn’t believe it. I was in Nolan’s arms six years after he left. He was here, in my bedroom.
I took a deep breath and the smell of his clean clothes and the scent that was only him, assaulted me. I was taken back to six years ago, before I had to face the loneliness that was my life. Before I lost my best friend. But right now, I wanted to stay in his arms without thinking about his departure or the future. I wrapped my arms around his narrow waist and balled his t-shirt in my fists.
He relaxed against me and ran a hand up and down my back, avoiding the small of my back that was bared by my tank top which had ridden up. “It feels different,” he said, pulling away. He nibbled on the loop in his lower lip.
I nodded and smiled weakly. Losing the heat and weight of his arms around me made me feel depressed. I missed that kind of attention, of touch. Mike and all the guys before him never hugged me just because they cared about me. If they hugged me it was with the purpose to have me naked minutes later and while I was all for it, it was also difficult when you had nobody to give you a real, warm hug. I’d forgotten what comfort felt like.
“It’s different. We’re both adults now.”

Excerpt:

Hayden waved at Lyssa, who’d made it to O’Hare International Airport a full ten minutes earlier than she’d planned. Her partner stood in front of the check-in kiosks with his overnight bag at his feet and his boarding pass in the hand he’d just flagged her down with.

“You didn’t have to wait for me,” she said.

“I know, but this way I’d know sooner if you were late and would be able to call to give you a nudge.”

“How did you know I wasn’t already at the gate?”

He shrugged his non-committal answer. “Did you already print your pass?”

“Yep.”

They walked over to the line for security, and she updated him on the slight changes to their itinerary as they wove their way through the tethered maze. They were flying to New York to interview two contenders to replace Blaze Capital Management in DH’s investment program and then would catch a quick flight to Boston for a meeting the following morning with Bell Funds, the third candidate.

After making their way through the scanner with no incident, they waited for their things to be ferried through their own scan. Lyssa snatched her zip-locked toiletries, purse, and shoes as soon as the conveyor belt brought the tray to her, but her carry-on bag reversed back into the machine just as quickly as it appeared. The security officer studied the screen. “Gonna have to search it,” he murmured, and then started the conveyor belt again, lifting her bag when it emerged and taking it to a side table.

Lyssa fumbled to get her ankle-high boots on and hobbled over to the table mid zip so she could keep an eye on what was happening with her bag. By the time she straightened to stand all the way up, Hayden was right behind her with his shiny black shoes tied and his jacket neatly draped over his arm.

“You can head for the gate if you want,” Lyssa said. “Oh, and coffee’s on me this time, if you don’t mind getting it.” She reached into her purse for her wallet.

“You can buy, but I’ll wait.”

When Lyssa turned toward him, she saw his eyes fixed on the contents of her bag while the airport guy pawed through it. She could only imagine what her partner thought he was learning about her now. Returning her focus to the bag, she squelched a gasp when the guy pulled her makeup bag up from the bottom, unzipping it. His gloved fingertip pushed aside eyeliners and lipsticks to reveal a baggie containing a four-inch-long, white tube. It had a clear, spiky rubber cap on the end, which Lyssa hoped wasn’t obvious through the wrinkled plastic encasing it. The on/off switch along the side would be pretty hard to miss, though.

The man closed the makeup case and returned it to the bottom of her luggage. “You’re good to go,” he said as he zipped up her bag and pushed it toward her.

She refused to look at Hayden even while she told herself he was an adult and a Pocket Rocket in a woman’s overnight bag was no big deal. They’d just walk down the hall to the gate, return to business talk, and that would be it. And then, about halfway down the hall, the silence got to her. Glancing toward him, she blurted, “It’s a flashlight. In case of emergency.”

Synopsis:

Lyssa Bates doesn’t need a man. Not when the world is fully-stocked with double A batteries and a wide array of options in Amazon’s health and sexual wellness category. After yet another failed relationship, the twenty-six-year-old investment analyst is convinced that real guys aren’t ever going to live up to her expectations—so why should she bother with them? She’s determined to keep her dating life purely electronic…though she occasionally fantasizes about Hayden King, the delicious new associate she just got partnered with at work.

While Lyssa manages her romantic risks by deleting men from of the equation, the ever-charming Hayden protects his heart by diversifying his love life across multiple women. As the two young professionals travel together around the country for business, their flirty working relationship develops into a close friendship that hurtles toward something more. Between hot tub confessions in Baltimore, an accidental kiss in Dallas, and an all-nighter in Chicago, Hayden proves himself to be better than any fantasy.

NickiWriting wasn’t something Nicki set out to do; it just sort of happened when she realized writing reports was by far her favorite part of her investment consulting position. She traded stock allocation and diversification for story arcs and dialogue and now weaves her creative writing time in with the other activities of her busy life with her family in the Chicago suburbs.

Nicki writes with two goals in mind: #1 to keep the characters realistic, even when their circumstances are anything but, and #2 to make the reader feel. Watch for her new title Vibrizzio, coming in 2015 from Swoon Romance. Her published works include Three Daves, a light-hearted romantic romp through a 1980s college campus, Divine Temptation, a romantic novel of angelic proportions, and Hans & Greta: a Twisted Fairy Tale Novella. Insecure Writer’s Support Group – How much writing do writers do?

InsecureWritersSupportGroup

I’m back to posting about my insecurities. Not like my insecurities went away, but I was too busy to write about them last month.

First, big thank you to our awesome co-hosts today, Eva SolarMelanie Schulz, Lisa-Buie Collard, and Stephen Tremp! And, as always, huge thanks to Alex. J. Cavanaugh for his leadership.

As I writer, when I am working on a first draft of a WIP, I tend to not like to do anything else. It is my favorite part about this writing job and I allow my brain to be consumed by it, enjoy it, mentally live it until I get the words on the page.

But, as a writer, I don’t get to write as much as I would like to. That is so disappointing and counterproductive. I know …if you want to get better, get recognized, get a royalty check that allows you to do this full time, you have to find time to write.

I am trying. As soon as I finish, plotting, editing, marketing, Facebooking, Tweeting, book related socializing, networking, signing, mailing, filing, editing, editing, editing. Oh, I said that already.

As a writer, how much writing do you get to do?

Z – Jay Z Quotes

ZOne of my favorite writers is Sean Carter aka, Jay Z. Yes, rappers are writers, too.

If I were to get a song lyric tattoo, I would started with Jay Z discography. Here are some of my favorites:
